How To Keep Your Job Site Safe In Extreme Heat

How To Keep Your Job Site Safe In Extreme Heat

If there’s one thing contractors and construction workers are well acquainted with, it’s working in all kinds of weather, including extreme heat. Keeping your crew safe on the job site during the hottest days of the summer is crucial for safety and productivity.

Here are our top tips for staying safe and as comfortable as possible in the heat.

SCHEDULE WORK AROUND THE WEATHER

During extremely hot times of the year, scheduling the hardest work for the coolest times of the day should become a top priority. Look at the heat index, which takes into account the temperature and humidity level, to figure out how hot it’ll feel throughout the day. Typically, the earlier you start your day, the better.

TAKE BREAKS AND HYDRATE

Encourage your crew to take breaks when they need them. If there isn’t space with air conditioning for breaks, make sure there are fans or at least shade available.

Your team should have water bottles on them to drink at least every 15 minutes during extremely hot weather. When you and your crew are sweating on super hot days, you lose salt and electrolytes, so stay hydrated with more than just water. Opt for drinks with electrolytes to keep hydrated and energized.

WEAR THE RIGHT CLOTHING

Certain clothes can protect your crew from the sun while also keeping them as cool as possible. Light-colored, loose-fitting, and lightweight clothing is best for the hottest days on the job site. Wearing long pants and long sleeves might not seem like what you want to do in the heat, but it is the best way to be protected from the sun’s rays. Wearing moisture-wicking clothing can also be a good option for comfort during hot and sweaty days.

WEAR SUNSCREEN

Applying sunscreen should be a non-negotiable part of everyone’s day, but it’s especially important for a crew that’s working outside. Put on a water-resistant or waterproof broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply it often throughout the day. Pick an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT ILLNESSES

When working in extreme heat, your crew is at risk for heat illnesses. Learn the signs of heat

illness like heat cramps or heat exhaustion. Common symptoms to look out for include dizziness, nausea, headache, and passing out.

Then, make sure to have an emergency plan that can be enacted if a member of your crew is

dealing with a heat illness. Err on the side of being cautious and call 911, since heat illnesses can lead to dire outcomes.
